For our challenge this month, the Ambassadors were sent an Italy-themed Color Builder box by Aurifil. I was sent Florence Brown containing three shades of brown (#2312, # 6010 and #2360) in 50 weight. We were to use all three colors in our project of thread painting, appliqué, or a combination of the two.

Florence is known for it’s Renaissance art and architecture: the statue of Michelangelo’s David, the Duomo cathedral with its Terra-cotta tiled dome, and the Uffizi Gallery. I also found a beautiful carousel – but maybe not for brown thread. Florence is also know for Ponte Vecchio, a segmental arch bridge over the Arno River.
I chose Ponte Vecchio, because I was intrigued by the shops on the bridge. Apparently, the first shops built were used by butchers, tanners, and farmers, but has evolved into high end shops of jewelers, art dealers, and souvenir sellers. You can read more here. If I ever visit Florence I would definitely want to go here.
I used a picture I found on Pinterest as my inspiration and appliquéd my pieces with Steam-A- Seam2. Next, I layered my quilt top, Heirloom Fusible Hobbs Cotton batting, and a backing fabric. The quilting was done with a Schmetz Microtex needle.

I started my thread work adding bricks to the bridge and some definition to the Terra-cotta roofs. I used all three colors of brown and a black thread for my project.

Disclosure: The products in this post were generously provided by Island Batik, Hobbs Batting, Aurifil Thread, and Schmetz Needles.
