New York Beauty Blog Hop

Today is my day to post my New York Beauty Quilt. It has been a while since I made this block and there are so many fun designs, I wanted to do them all! I used the book, Dazzling New York Beauty Sampler, by Cinzia White, for my patterns.

The fabric, needles, batting, and thread were all generously supplied to me by Island Batik, Schmetz, Hobbs, and Aurifil.

The fabric I used is “Winter Sky” by Kathy Engle. It is being sent to shops currently.

I designed the quilt on EQ. It was fun to use the arc tool and the actual fabric I was using. I used 29 of the 54 blocks in the book, then designed one of my own for a total of 30 blocks. Each block was 10 inches square.

Paper Piecing

I paper pieced each arc. One of the tricks I have learned about this method is to leave a 1/2″ seam around your block instead of the needed 1/4″: it gives you a little wiggle room when you trim down your block.

I sewed on my lines, but I have seen some of my fellow Ambassadors folding back the paper on the line and sewing next to it. That way you don’t have to tear off the paper later. Brilliant! I will be trying that in the future.

Now, anyone who follows me, knows I can’t wait to get a quilt on my long arm. The quilting process is one of the best parts of creating a quilt for me. I was excited to use Hobbs Cotton/Wool blend batting; I used Aurifil 50 weight thread for piecing and quilting. The color I used for quilting was #2710. I used a Schmetz Microtex needle for piecing. I use Schmetz needles on my long arm as well, and love them.

Each block was given it’s own unique quilting design. I had a blast!

I really cut it close with that batting!
